March-ing Towards Spring with Sun Salutations

Ah, March—the month where winter's icy grip starts to loosen, and we can almost hear the collective sighs of relief from sun-starved souls everywhere (including me!). As the days gradually lengthen and the sun asserts its dominance once more (DST is in 10 days, but who’s counting?), it's the perfect time to celebrate with a hearty round (or 9) of Surya Namaskar– Sun Salutations!

Why Sun Salutations, you ask? Well, it's like giving a big, warm welcome back to our favorite celestial body after its winter hiatus. Plus, it's a stellar way to warm up and to  invigorate both body and mind, aligning ourselves with the natural rhythms of Nature. After all, if the sun can rise with unwavering determination each day, so can we—albeit with a little more downward dog and a lot less solar power.

But where do these radiant salutations come from? The name Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit translates to “bow or salute to the Sun”. My understanding is that sun salutations originated in ancient India as a reverent homage to the Hindu sun god, Surya. Picture yogis greeting the sunrise with a sequence of graceful movements, paying homage to the life-giving energy that sustains us all. It's like saying, "Hey there, Mr. Sun, thanks for not ghosting us during winter!"

Now, let's talk about the traditional method—nine rounds of 12 (yes, TWELVE) flowing movements, each synchronized with the breath…culminating in a blissful state of warmth and vitality. In either method, it's like doing the Cha-Cha with the sun, only way more spiritual and way less sequins (though sequins can’t hurt).

So, as we march towards Spring, let's salute the strengthening sun with gusto! Roll out your mat, strike a pose, and embrace the rejuvenating energy of sun salutations. Who knows, with enough practice, you might just radiate sunshine from within—no SPF required!
